Scott Sorkin concentrates his practice in the areas of insurance regulation and corporate matters. His practice consists primarily of the representation of insurance companies, including traditional insurance companies, stock companies, mutuals, reciprocals, exchanges, risk retention groups, captives, group self-insurance trusts, and other alternative risk transfer vehicles. He also represents brokers, agents, management companies and other regulated entities and professionals. He provides daily guidance to his clients on a number of regulatory, corporate, transactional, and insurance coverage matters.
Scott has considerable experience and regularly assists insurance clients with company formation and licensure, obtaining approval of their rates and forms and other regulatory filings, financial and market conduct examinations and compliance, and resolving compliance issues with the Virginia Bureau of Insurance. Scott’s practice also includes representing insurers in corporate, regulatory and significant transaction matters, including mergers and acquisitions, Form A and other insurance holding company system filings, restructurings and conversions, insurance company taxation, reinsurance, loss portfolio transfers, corporate governance, cybersecurity, and legislation.
Scott is a member of the Board of Directors of the Federation of Regulatory Counsel, Inc., a professional association of insurance regulatory lawyers formed for the purpose of raising the standard of excellence in the practice of regulatory law. He is also a member of the Association of Insurance Compliance Professionals and he regularly attends meetings of the National Association of Insurance Commissioners and industry trade organizations including the National Association of Mutual Insurance Companies and the American Property Casualty Insurance Association.
Scott also has considerable experience representing a broad array of other businesses and professionals in regulatory compliance, corporate matters and significant transactions, including business planning, mergers and acquisitions, business sales, physician contracts, employment, financing, real estate, non-competition agreements, tax-exempt bond financings, tax, and other matters.
